A Visit from Sparrow Trust and Partners

At Mzameni Children Assessment & Remedial Centre, the safety and well-being of our learners is one of our top priorities, especially when it comes to equipping them with the knowledge and confidence to navigate the world around them, both online and offline.

We were honoured to welcome Sparrow Trust, a counter-human trafficking organization based right here in Amanzimtoti, to host a powerful and eye-opening session with our senior learners. This impactful event focused on social crime prevention, with topics covering online safety, privacy protection, and cyberbullying; all vital issues in today’s digital age.

Their team did more than just speak. They engaged, listened, and connected with our learners in a way that left a lasting impression. It was deeply inspiring to see our students take part in discussions that empower them to protect themselves and others.

This meaningful session was made even more impactful through the partnership of Amanzimtoti SAPS, the Amanzimtoti Community Police Forum, and the SAPS Spiritual Network. Together, they’re helping create safer communities by raising awareness about crimes that affect our most vulnerable children and taking active steps to prevent them.

Empowering Our Learners with Awareness and Support about Drug Abuse and Bullying

At Mzameni Children’s Centre, we believe in nurturing not only academic excellence but also emotional intelligence, safety awareness, and the confidence to navigate life’s challenges. Mrs. Zonke Shazi-Hlongwane led powerful and age-appropriate sessions on bullying and drug abuse awareness for our learners.

These sessions are a vital part of our school’s commitment to developing the whole child, especially when it comes to sensitive topics that affect many young people today.

Why These Conversations Matter

Children, including those with autism and other learning differences, deserve clear, respectful, and accessible education around personal safety, boundaries, and the risks of substance abuse. For some neurodivergent learners, recognizing social cues or understanding harmful intentions may be more challenging, which is why guided, compassionate conversations are so important.

Mrs. Shazi-Hlongwane created a safe, welcoming space where learners could engage, ask questions, and receive practical tools to help them make safe choices. Her sessions empowered learners with:

Tools to identify different forms of bullying
Confidence to speak up and seek help
Understanding of peer pressure and drug-related dangers
Strategies to protect their mental health and self-esteem

Supporting Neurodiverse Learners with Care

When teaching children with autism about these topics, it’s essential to approach them with sensitivity, clarity, and respect for each learner’s individual needs. What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person interacts with the world around them. It can impact communication, social interactions, and behavior. However, autism is not a limitation—it is a different way of experiencing the world. People with autism have unique strengths, talents, and perspectives that contribute meaningfully to society.

Recognizing the Strengths of Autism

Individuals with autism often display incredible abilities, such as:
Strong attention to detail – Many autistic individuals excel in spotting patterns, details, and structures that others may overlook.

As the curtains draw on a remarkable 2024 school year, we at Mzameni Children’s Centre came together to honor and celebrate the efforts, growth, and achievements of our incredible learners during our Year-End Prize Giving Ceremony. This special day was filled with joy, laughter, and a sense of accomplishment as parents, teachers, and learners gathered to reflect on a year of progress and dedication.

The day began with the warm smiles of proud parents and eager learners who were excited to receive their certificates and awards. From academic excellence to personal growth and acts of kindness, every achievement was recognized and celebrated. The glow on each child’s face as they walked up to collect their award was priceless—a testament to the hard work and determination they’ve shown throughout the year.

Parents were beaming with pride as they applauded their children’s milestones. It was a beautiful reminder of the strong partnerships we’ve built between our school and families, working together to nurture the potential within each learner.

At Mzameni, we believe that education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. It’s about equipping our learners with real-life skills that empower them to navigate the world confidently. This term, our Intermediate and Senior Phase learners rolled up their sleeves, donned aprons, and stepped into the kitchen to develop their hospitality skills through baking

The kitchen was alive with excitement and laughter as students embarked on this culinary adventure. From measuring ingredients to kneading dough, each learner had the chance to experience the different stages of baking, all while having fun and learning valuable skills. Baking is not only a fun activity; it’s a wonderful opportunity to teach responsibility, teamwork, and the satisfaction of creating something from scratch.

Why Baking?

Baking is a fantastic way to teach practical skills that our learners can use in daily life. Hospitality skills are valuable, whether they choose to pursue a career in the food industry or simply want to develop the self-confidence that comes with mastering a new skill. Here’s why we incorporated baking into our learning program:

Teamwork and Collaboration
Baking is often a group activity, and it requires teamwork and communication. Our learners worked together to follow recipes, share tasks, and support each other in the kitchen. This collaborative experience fostered a sense of camaraderie and helped them build essential social skills.
Mathematics in Action
Baking requires careful measurements, conversions, and timing, which make it a great way to apply mathematical concepts in a real-world setting. Learners got hands-on experience with fractions, ratios, and sequencing—skills that are crucial both in and out of the classroom.
Creativity and Experimentation
Baking allows for creative expression, from decorating cookies to choosing flavors. The students had the chance to experiment with different ingredients and techniques, sparking their creativity and helping them gain confidence in trying new things.
Responsibility and Independence
Following a recipe requires focus and responsibility. Our learners took charge of their tasks, ensuring they followed each step carefully and safely. This activity encouraged independence and responsibility, showing them the importance of paying attention to detail and following instructions.
A Sense of Accomplishment
The joy and pride on our learners’ faces when they took their finished baked goods out of the oven was priceless! The sense of accomplishment they felt from creating something delicious and sharing it with their peers was a powerful boost to their self-esteem. It taught them that with effort, patience, and teamwork, they could achieve great things.

Our baking day was a massive success, and we’re excited to continue integrating more hands-on learning experiences into our curriculum. At Mzameni, we are dedicated to nurturing the unique talents of each child and helping them develop both academically and personally. By offering experiences that go beyond traditional learning, we aim to inspire a love for lifelong learning and equip our learners with the confidence to dream big.

Our Learners’ Artistic and Functional Projects

We are always looking for ways to encourage creativity, problem-solving, and skill development among our learners. Thanks to a generous donation from Dulux, we were given the freedom to embark on a project of our choosing—and our students made the most of this exciting opportunity!

Turning Donation into Imagination

The Dulux donation provided us with the resources to dream big and create meaningful, hands-on activities that stimulate our learners’ imaginations. With a strong focus on sustainability and recycling, we aimed to show our students that art and functionality can coexist beautifully. So, we rolled up our sleeves and transformed everyday recyclable items into delightful creations that serve both artistic and practical purposes.

One of our first projects was to design and build kites. Using recycled materials like old plastic bags, wooden sticks, and string, our learners crafted kites that they were thrilled to fly in the open air. This activity not only brought smiles to their faces but also taught them the basics of aerodynamics and the importance of repurposing waste.

Our students also created colorful pencil holders using recycled ice cream containers and other discarded materials. These pencil holders are a perfect blend of form and function, showcasing the children’s artistic flair while serving as practical storage solutions for their study desks. By decorating these containers with paint and other embellishments, our learners developed their fine motor skills and explored different design concepts.

In another fun and skill-building project, our students made small baskets using recycled paper and other repurposed materials. This activity taught them patience, precision, and the art of weaving—an age-old craft that requires both creativity and discipline. Through weaving, they enhanced their problem-solving skills, learning to work systematically and appreciate the beauty of creating something functional from scratch.

The Power of Art and Hands-On Learning

These activities are about much more than just crafting. They’re a means of teaching our students essential skills that they can carry forward in life. Working on these projects developed their creative thinking, improved their occupational skills, and presented opportunities to solve problems in real time. Our learners discovered the importance of teamwork, practiced decision-making, and learned how to see the potential in what most people would consider waste.

We are incredibly grateful to Dulux for their generous donation, which made these enriching experiences possible. It’s amazing what a little creativity and a lot of heart can achieve when given the right resources. Our students had a fantastic time, and we hope to continue inspiring them to think outside the box and dream big.

Getting Our Hands Dirty: Exploring the Textures of Soil

Our learners delved into the world of soil. Through tactile exploration, the children learned about different soil types by feeling the textures with their own hands. This kind of sensory experience is invaluable, especially for young learners, as it helps them make meaningful connections between the physical world and the concepts they’re being taught.

The benefits go beyond just academic learning. Studies have shown that touching and working with soil can have a calming effect on the mind, reducing stress and increasing overall well-being. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, giving children the opportunity to connect with nature is more important than ever. It’s not just about learning the difference between sandy, clay, and loamy soils—it’s about grounding them in the natural world, fostering an appreciation for the environment, and allowing them to explore their surroundings in a way that feels both natural and intuitive.

Inspiring Our Learners Beyond the Classroom

We’re thrilled to share the details of a recent trip that brought our learners into the world of storytelling, creativity, and cultural appreciation with none other than the legendary Dr. Gcina Mhlophe.

Our learners had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Dr. Gcina Mhlophe’s special Tree in Bluff, where she promotes reading and so much more. The theme of the day, “Children Must Read, Sing, Dance, and Bake,” perfectly encapsulated Dr. Mhlophe’s holistic approach to learning. It was a day filled with laughter, creativity, and hands-on experiences that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Dr. Mhlophe, an icon in South African literature and performance arts, is renowned for her storytelling prowess, which has captivated audiences worldwide. She is a multi-talented artist whose work as an author, poet, playwright, and performer has made an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. Her storytelling sessions, deeply rooted in African traditions, have inspired generations and continue to be a beacon of cultural heritage.

Our trip to Bluff was not just about watching and listening—it was about participating and learning through doing. Dr. Mhlophe engaged our learners in a variety of activities that went beyond traditional storytelling. The children read stories, sang songs, danced to joyful rhythms, and even baked treats, all under her guidance.

On Mandela Day, Mzameni Children Assessment Remedial Centre embarked on a journey of commemoration and inspiration. The day was filled with creative energy as our learners engaged in crafting posters, symbolizing the spirit of giving and community upliftment that Mandela himself embodied.

Through the medium of art and play, our children not only expressed their creativity but also absorbed profound lessons about Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy. By discussing the significance of dedicating 67 minutes to service, they learned the importance of empathy, unity, and contributing positively to society.

At Mzameni, we believe in the transformative power of history lessons conveyed through creative arts and play. These activities not only foster a deeper understanding of historical figures like Mandela but also instill values that are crucial for building a compassionate and inclusive future.
