The Power of Outdoor Learning
At Mzameni, we believe in the importance of learning beyond the four walls of a classroom. Recently, our Foundation Phase learners have been engaging in hands-on, outdoor activities that not only enhance their understanding of academic concepts but also foster a deeper connection to the world around them.
Getting Our Hands Dirty: Exploring the Textures of Soil
Our learners delved into the world of soil. Through tactile exploration, the children learned about different soil types by feeling the textures with their own hands. This kind of sensory experience is invaluable, especially for young learners, as it helps them make meaningful connections between the physical world and the concepts they’re being taught.

The benefits go beyond just academic learning. Studies have shown that touching and working with soil can have a calming effect on the mind, reducing stress and increasing overall well-being. In our fast-paced, technology-driven world, giving children the opportunity to connect with nature is more important than ever. It’s not just about learning the difference between sandy, clay, and loamy soils—it’s about grounding them in the natural world, fostering an appreciation for the environment, and allowing them to explore their surroundings in a way that feels both natural and intuitive.
Learning Through Experience: The Magic of Measurements
When it comes to understanding measurements, nothing beats real-world application. Rather than reading about measurements in a textbook, the children were able to physically measure objects, spaces, and even compare their findings with each other. This kind of hands-on experience helps solidify their understanding and encourages them to see the relevance of what they’re learning in everyday life.
What made this experience even more special was the element of peer teaching. As the children worked together, they were not only learning from their own experiences but also from one another. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of teamwork and builds confidence as they explain their understanding to their peers.

These outdoor learning experiences highlight the importance of getting out of the traditional classroom setting. Children are naturally curious and love to explore—when they’re given the opportunity to learn through experience, their engagement and retention of knowledge increases significantly.
At Mzameni, we strive to create a learning environment that is dynamic and responsive to the needs of our students. By incorporating outdoor learning into our curriculum, we’re not just teaching our children academic concepts—we’re helping them develop life skills, fostering a love for learning, and encouraging them to see the world as their classroom.
